Why Do People Need Progressive Lenses?

Why Do People Need Progressive Lenses?

As you grow older, you may experience changes in your vision. Some people develop presbyopia, which affects both your up close and distance vision. Progressive lenses from Eye Land can help correct vision changes at different distances to improve your sight. Dr. Lippman and Dr. Gold, your optometrists serving Chevy Chase, Rockville, and Aspen Hill, can diagnose presbyopia during an eye exam so you can get the glasses you need to correct your sight.

What Is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is an eye condition that can affect both your near and distance vision. If you have presbyopia, you may have trouble reading books or seeing words on your computer screen. You may also experience blurred vision at a distance. Anyone can develop presbyopia, whether you wear glasses or not. Although this age-related condition can be annoying, your vision can be corrected fairly easily with progressive lenses. Progressive lenses work by correcting your vision at various different distances, just like bifocals do, but instead of being broken up into different sections, progressive lenses offer a smooth, lineless transition. Your Eye Land optometrist can help you determine if progressives are right for you.

How Progressive Lenses Correct Your Vision

Progressive lenses are line-free, multi-focal eyeglasses that magnify your vision seamlessly to help you see clearly, both up close and at a distance. The power within the lenses shifts gradually from one point to the next, improving your vision at all distances.

Traditional bifocal and multi-focal lenses have lines across the lens to distinguish the different distances at which they correct vision. Progressives, however, don’t have lines, giving you a smoother transition between prescriptions. Progressives are more comfortable to use and give you clearer vision at all distances.
